Perched on their pedestal, they look north towards Switzerland.\n\nThe National Monument is located in the Jardin Anglais, facing the lake. It was inaugurated in 1869. With this work, the sculptor Robert Dorer symbolised Geneva’s integration into the Swiss Confederation on 12 September 1814 with two women each carrying a sword and shield.

Built around 123 AD. as a sepulcher of the emperor Hadrian and his family, the current Castel Sant'Angelo (in the background) was used by the Popes as a fortress, prison and refuge due to its proximity to the Vatican.
