Rubber Rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa) is a North American shrub in the sunflower or aster family. It grows in the arid regions of the west from the Great Plains to the Pacific and northern Mexico. It is a perennial shrub and can reproduce from seeds and root sprouts. It has small yellow flowers and blooms from August to October. Rabbitbrush thrives in poor alkaline soils that are common to the desert. It is an important source of food for browsing wildlife. This rabbitbrush with Mount Elden in the background was photographed in a meadow on Campbell Mesa in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

There was a proliferation of wildflowers in March 2017 in northwestern Baja California after the prodigious rains of the preceding winter. The 100 km stretch of desert between El Rosario and Cataviña exploded with at least 50 species of wildflowers in such abundance as to cover entire hillsides and valleys with swaths of color. In this photo, California poppy (Eschscholzia californica), California encelia (Encelia californica) common goldfields (Lasthenia gracilis), and many other flowers, as well as boojum trees (Fouquieria columnaris), and cardón (Pachycereus pringlei) and Baja California cholla (Cylindropuntia cholla) cacti are present.

Campbell Mesa is one of many wooded mesas in the Coconino National Forest of Northern Arizona. On the west side of the mesa are stands of Ponderosa Pine interspersed with oak groves, grassy meadows and wildflowers. On the east side the pine forest gives way to junipers and other scrub vegetation. Campbell Mesa was named after Hugh E. Campbell, a prosperous local sheep rancher from Nova Scotia, Canada. He was born on June 10, 1862 and came to Arizona in the early 1890's. As a strong Democrat, he took a serious interest in civic affairs and was elected to the Arizona Senate and supported the prosperity and welfare of his community. Campbell Mesa is now a popular destination for mountain biking, equestrian use and hiking. This view of a colorful meadow following the monsoon rain was photographed on Campbell Mesa in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
