Paramaribo, Suriname: Waterkant (Waterfront) is the oldest street in Paramaribo, located directly on the quay of the Suriname River. Due to its iconic appearance, it forms a central part of the historic city center of Paramaribo, which has been protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Many of the original buildings burned in the city fire of 1821 . After the fire, the architect Johan August Voigt gave Paramaribo a new cityscape by building an ensemble of monumental buildings on the Waterkant. Suriname, Paramaribo: Suriname's emblem in the tympanum of the Presidential Palace - an 18th century building - the coat of arms of Suriname consists of an oval divided shield with a sailing ship at sea on the left half, and a royal palm on the earth on the right half. In the center there is a green diamond with a five-pointed star in it. The shield is flanked by two brown natives with bows and arrows, with a pennant underneath with the Latin motto 'Justitia, Pietas, Fides' (Justice, Piety, Fidelity). Pediment framed by scroll modillions.
