The common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), also known as the Eurasian kingfisher and river kingfisher, is a small kingfisher with seven subspecies recognized within its wide distribution across Eurasia and North Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but migrates from areas where rivers freeze in winter.

$The Alcedinidae family, with 19 genera and 116 species, occupies all continents, except of course Antarctica.\nThe size of its representatives ranges from that of a sparrow to that of a crow. The majority frequent aquatic environments and their surroundings, the others being more forested.\nThe plumage is often brightly colored blue, green, rufous or brown, with little or no sexual dimorphism.\nThe very small relative size of their legs with partially fused toes prevents them from walking on the ground.\nConversely, their dagger-shaped beak is typically that of piscivores, a bit like herons. It is strong to very strong. This is their prey capture tool. All are in fact carnivorous, the food spectrum varying depending on the habitat occupied.\nFor reproduction, they are all cave dwellers. The majority of them dig their nest with their beak in a loose substrate, soil, wood, termite mound, etc. The others use pre-existing cavities like those of woodpeckers. The clutch size is high, it can reach around ten eggs. A bit like Picidae, the chicks are altricial. They are born naked and blind in a short period of time to have approximately the same age and therefore the same chances of being fed by their parents. A long stay in the nest follows.\nGiven their particular ecological requirements (environments rich in prey, availability of nesting sites), it is not surprising that a good number of them, 35% to be exact, are classified as species with a conservation problem. One is extinct in the wild and 4 are critically endangered.$
