Looking at the portrait of a man on the house wall at the ruins of Pompeii. The Pompeian painting Styles are four periods which are distinguished in ancient Roman mural painting. They were originally delineated and described by the German archaeologist August Mau, 1840–1909, from the excavation of wall paintings at Pompeii, which is one of the largest groups of surviving examples of Roman frescoes. Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Today Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy.

The Hadrianic Nymphaeum\nTabernacle architecture\n\nThis monumental fountain, dating to 129-132 AD,\nwas built on a terrace above the Lower Agora and\ndedicated to Emperor Hadrian. A flight of eight steps\nleads you to the basin of the fountain; behind it\nyou can see the remaining part of the monument's\nback wall. Originally 17m high, this was the only\ntwo-storey fountain at Sagalassos. Functional and\nprestigious at the same time, the monument was\naligned with the south Colonnaded Street so that\nvisitors could see its upper storey as they entered\nthe City.\n\nThe fountain was commissioned by the first\nRoman knight of Sagalassos, Tıberius Claudius\nPiso, who ordered its construction in his Will. He\ndedicated the monument to Emperor Hadrian. it\nwas common in Roman provincial towns for local\naristocrats and benefactors to dedicate monuments\nto the emperors. This helped them display their\nconnections with Rome.\n\nThis monument is an example of -tabernacle\narchitecture: the back wall has niches while\nprojecting podiums made of one or two pairs of\ncolumns formed 'tabernacles', in which statues were\nplaced. In the centre of the Iower storey stood a\n4-meter-high statue of Apollo. The fountain was\nclose to the Temple of Apollo Klarios and was also\ndedicated to this god. Above the colossal statue\nof Apollo stood a gilded bronze statue of Emperor\nHadrian, flanked on both sides by bronze statues of\nPiso. The other statues in the fountain represented\nPiso's two heirs, who executed his Will, and statues\nCf gods and demigods.\n\nThe pilasters of the podium are decorated with\nrelief carvings of six of the nine muses. The statues\nof the nymphaeum were made by three different\nworkshops, all of very high quality. The monumental\nfountain probably collapsed soon after 500 AD and\nwas never reconstructed.
