Different stages of life of an Alaskan chum salmon or dog salmon or calico, known scientifically as Oncorhynchus keta. In the ocean (ocean phase, top picture) it shows grayish silver colors. After entering rivers for spawning (spawning phase, freshwater phase) an adult fish develops olive green coloration on the back with maroon sides covered with irregular dull, purple or magenta bars. Ocean phase male on the top, freshwater phase female on the bottom.

Salmon run up stream through the ladder at the Ballard locks.
The salmon run is the time when salmon, which have migrated from the ocean, swim to the upper reaches of rivers where they spawn on gravel beds. After spawning, all Pacific salmon and most Atlantic salmon die, and the salmon life cycle starts over again.
The salmon lifecycle begins with an egg. As the salmon move on to the Fry and Parr stage they will develop stripe patterns. These small salmon are very vulnerable. They still have a lot of growing to do before they reach maturity.

Kokanee salmon spawning in a remote stream. British Columbia, Canada. Kokanee salmon - a landlocked species of salmon - turn bright red in late fall during spawning. The clear creeks in the region provide an impressive show of colour during this annual event. Bears, wolves, coyotes, eagles and other carnivores frequent these streams to feed on the fish. The fish lay their eggs and then die.
Fly fishing for coho salmon in Alaska
August 27, 2021, Valdez, Alaska. Salmon, in the thousands, have made their way to their spawning grounds. These fish fought to the very last breath of their life to do what they were intended to do. It is quite a sight to see thousand of fish fighting, even to their demise, I to get to the place of their birth.
