$Longhorn Cowfish Lactoria cornuta occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from Red Sea and East Africa to the Marquesan and Tuamoto islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island in a depth range from 1 to 100m, max. length 46 cm, common 40 cm. \nThe species lives on coastal muddy or sandy habitats in still bays and is commonly found in harbours and estuaries, feeding on benthic invertebrates by blowing away the sand. They are predatory solitary creatures that feed on corals and jellyfish. This is a typical demonstration of their primal instinctive behaviour. $Thornback Cowfish Lactoria fornasini occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from East Africa to the Hawaiian and Rapa Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Lord Howe Island and in the Southeast Atlantic, sometimes reaching the southeast coast of South Africa. The solitary species occurs in a depth range from 5 to 132 m, usually from 6 to 30m, max. total length 23cm. Thornback Cowfish inhabits clear outer lagoon and seaward reefs. Males are highly territorial. \nThe 'rowing' swimming motion is achieved using their dorsal, anal, and pectoral fins, while the caudal fin is reserved for bursts of speed. \nCowfishes have the ability to secrete a toxic mucus, ostracitoxin, as a chemical defense against predators. Released under stress, this toxin dissolves in water and can harm or kill nearby marine life, including the boxfish itself in confined spaces like tidepools. $Birdbeak Burrfish Cyclichthys orbicularis occurs in tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Philippines, north to southern Japan, south to Australia and New Caledonia and in the Southeast Atlantic at the south coast of South Africa in a depth range from 9 to 170m, max. length 30cm. \n\nThe nocturnal species inhabits clear protected reefs with sponge and algal habitats, staying often in large sponges during the day. Cyclichthys orbicularis occasionally occurs on reefs, but usually over sand and mud bottoms. \nThe species feeds on hard-shelled invertebrates. \n\nInterestingly, this fish can puff up its body by ingesting water, transforming into a spiny ball as a defense mechanism, which reduces its mobility but deters predators. His chemical defense mechanism is more effective than the swimming away: Tetrodotoxin (TTX) is a potent neurotoxin found in various marine organisms, including Cyclichthys orbicularis. It can be lethal to non-resistant fish species. The estimated lethal dose of TTX in humans is around 2 mg of pure toxin. Even small amounts can cause severe symptoms. \n\nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°27'13.104 N 125°14'14.634 E at 13m depth$
