Liatris spicata, commonly called Blazing star, Dense blazing star or Gay feather, is a tall, upright, clump-forming perennial. It features terminal spikes of rounded, fluffy, deep purple or white flower heads appearing atop rigid, erect, leafy flower stalks. It has the habit of opening its fluffy flowers from the top of the spike down.

The Obedient Plat (Physostegia virginiana) is in the mint family. It is also known as Obedience, or False Dragonhead. The plant is called Obedient Plant because if you reposition the flowers, they will stay that way. The False Dragonhead name comes from the fact that the flower resembles the Dragon Head plant (Dracocephalum sp.).
