These are common milkweed plants (Asclepias syriaca). They have a compound flower known as an umbel. Milkweed is also known as; butterfly flower, silkweed, silky swallow-wort, and Virginia silkweed. Milkweeds contain cardiac toxins that make the plants toxic to most insects and animals. Some insects, such as Monarch butterflies and their caterpillars have the ability to store the toxins as a defense.
