Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, Forum Romanum, Rome, Italy
Rome Italy - Located in the ancient Foro Romano or Ancient Roman Forum, the temple was begun in 141 AD by the Emperor Antoninus Pius and was dedicated to his wife Faustina the Elder. After his death in 161 AD, it was re-dedicated jointly to Antoninus and his wife on the instruction of his successor, Marcus Aurelius. The temple was converted to a Roman Catholic church and known as San Lorenzo in Miranda, perhaps in the seventh century, but it seems to be attested only from the eleventh century AD. Christianisation has accounted for the survival of the Cella and Portico of the temple, but the marble cladding of the Cella had been scavenged. The church lacks the usual east-end apse: one was never added, to retain the temple's structural integrity.
