Istanbul,Turkey - August 10, 2022: Turkish and foreign tourists are visiting Hagia Sophia, in the Sultanahmet district of Istanbul. The Hagia Sophia was the main temple of Byzantium then the Muslim mosque and museum but now is Holy Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque (Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Åžerifi) This redesignation is controversial, drawing condemnation from the Turkish opposition, UNESCO, the World Council of Churches, the International Association of Byzantine Studies, and many international leaders.

Hagia Sophia (Turkish: Ayasofya; KoinÄ“ Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, romanized: Hagía Sophía; Latin: Sancta Sophia, lit. 'Holy Wisdom'), officially the Holy Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque (Turkish: Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Åžerifi), and formerly the Church of Hagia Sophia (Turkish: Ayasofya Kilisesi; Greek: Îαός της Αγίας του Î˜ÎµÎ¿Ï Î£Î¿Ï†Î¯Î±Ï‚; Latin: Ecclesia Sanctae Sophiae), is a Late Antique place of worship in Istanbul, designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles. Built in 537 as the patriarchal cathedral of the imperial capital of Constantinople, it was the largest Christian church of the eastern Roman Empire (the Byzantine Empire) and the Eastern Orthodox Church, except during the Latin Empire from 1204 to 1261, when it became the city's Latin Catholic cathedral. In 1453, after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. In 1935, the secular Turkish Republic established it as a museum. In 2020, it re-opened as a mosque.
