Miquelon, Miquelon Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers Church in Miquelon is the main religious building on the island of Miquelon in the French archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon. Built entirely of wood between 1862 and 1865 to replace an earlier church, it has a rectangular plan topped with a gabled roof and a bell tower at the pediment. Inaugurated in 1865, it takes its name from Father Ardilliers and his sister, the nun of Notre-Dame-des-Ardilliers in Saumur, who contributed financially to the construction of the first church in Miquelon. Located near the port of the village of Miquelon in the north of the commune of Miquelon-Langlade, this Catholic church was consolidated at the beginning of the 20th century and has been under the jurisdiction of the diocese of La Rochelle and Saintes since 2018, following the abolition of the apostolic vicariate of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon.

The hull is typically designed for exceptional stability to counteract the significant list and trim changes that occur during heavy lifting operations, often in challenging sea conditions. Buoy tenders are essential for ensuring maritime safety and are operated by maritime authorities worldwide to keep shipping lanes accurately marked and operational.

Miquelon, Miquelon Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: the Great Expulsion, known in French as Le Grand Dérangement, was the forced removal of approximately 11,000 to 13,000 Acadians by British authorities between 1755 and 1764 during the French and Indian War (Seven Years’ War). The Acadians, descendants of French settlers in present-day Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island, were targeted due to their refusal to swear unconditional allegiance to the British Crown and fears that they might support France militarily. Many were deported to British colonies along the Atlantic coast, the Caribbean, Britain, and France, often under harsh conditions that led to significant loss of life. Some survivors eventually found refuge in Louisiana, where they became the ancestors of the Cajun community. The Expulsion profoundly disrupted Acadian society and remains a defining event in the region’s history and collective memory. Saint Pierre and Miquelon served as a place of refuge for some displaced Acadians. Although the archipelago lacked the resources to accommodate large numbers, it became home for several hundred Acadian exiles, particularly after France regained control of the islands under the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The population of Saint Pierre and Miquelon grew intermittently with successive waves of Acadian arrivals. The islands thus became one of several locations—alongside parts of France, the Caribbean, and Louisiana—where Acadian communities attempted to rebuild after the disruption of their homeland. The Acadian presence has left a lasting cultural imprint on the archipelago, particularly in family names and local traditions.

Saint Pierre, Saint Pierre Island, Saint Pierre et Miquelon: a slipway, also known as a marine railway or a patent slip, is a structure used for moving vessels between the water and dry land. It consists of an inclined ramp with rails that extend from the shore into the water, upon which a wheeled cradle or carriage runs. To bring a vessel ashore, the cradle is lowered down the rails until it is submerged, allowing the vessel to be floated into position and secured. A powerful winch and cable system then pulls the cradle up the incline, carrying the vessel completely out of the water. This method provides access to the hull for construction, maintenance, repair, or storage, serving as a common alternative to a dry dock, particularly for small to medium-sized ships and boats.
