This is the Fool (Joker), an un-numbered picture card from a pack of large Tarot cards (called Taroch or Tarok in German). Cards in this pack measure 74 x 129mm. The maker is Fred. Piatnik & Sohne of Vienna. The Fool is a Harlequin holding a hat, and on the hat is a representation of himself. This design is in some ways similar to the Trump card number I (one), where Harlequin is shown holding a harp, and on the harp is a smaller version of himself. The history of Tarot goes back to 15th century Italy. There were 78 cards, including 21 'trump' cards and a 'fool' or 'skeench' dressed as a harlequin, which in modern packs would be called a joker. The large numbers of cards and the complicated rules led to a decline in the popularity of these Tarot card games. Austrian Taroch cards use French symbols (clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades), and a simplified pack numbering 54, which still includes the 21 trumps plus the fool. These make up the 22 'Taroch' (trump) cards. This particular pack was made by Piatnik (Vienna) in 1900.

Knave or Jack of Hearts playing card from the William Tell 'Hungarian deck' of 1890 by Austrian manufacturer Piatnik, manufactured in Pest, Hungary. As well as 'Hungarian pack' and 'William Tell', this pack also has the name Four Seasons, because the Aces (they are two's, but act as Aces) represent each of the four seasons. This style of playing card is very popular in Hungary. The card symbols follow the German tradition of bells, hearts, acorns and leaves. Here is a comparison between terminology in Hungarian and in German. German 'bells' become Hungarian 'pumpkins'. Hungarian: T÷k (pumpkin); German: Schellen (bells) Hungarian: Piros (red); German: Herz (heart Rot (red) Hungarian: Makk (acorn); German: Eichel (acorn) Hungarian: Z÷ld (green); German: Laub (leaves), Gr³n (green).

It was printed in chromolithography by Bernard (Bernhard) Dondorf from Frankfurt aM, Germany, and the deck included characters from Shakespeare's plays as face cards. The Queen of Diamonds is illustrated as Katherine of Aragon, from the play (Henry VIII). Bernard (Bernhard) Dondorf opened a lithographic printing business in 1833, first producing playing cards in 1839. His playing cards were popular for their designs and overall quality. He retired from the business in 1872 after producing popular and widely-copied designs for many years.

1860 Ten of Hearts playing card with a beautiful back design illustration in blue and green, showing a Japanese girl picking oranges. The square corners suggests that this card was manufactured in the mid-19th century, in the reign of Queen Victoria. The shallow dip in the heart symbols suggests that the manufacturer was Charles Goodall.
