The sculpture was created in 1640 by the sculptor Pietro Taccana based on the portrait of the king by Velázquez, and the calculations for determining the center of gravity of the horse, resting only on the hind legs, were made by Galileo Galilei. The pedestal of the monument is decorated with various bas-reliefs of the Romanesque style. The king himself looks proudly into the distance, and in his right hand rises a scepter.
The bronze statue represents Felipe II mounted on horseback. It is placed in the centre of Plaza Mayor in Madrid and it is here represented with the clock tower as a backdrop on a partially cloudy sky during daytime.
