The cobra plant is native to swamps in mountain areas of northern California and southern Oregon and uses its carnivorous pitfall traps to supplement its nutritional requirements in poor soil conditions. The plant’s hooded pitcher₋like leaves resemble striking cobras and bear purple-red appendages that look similar to a snake’s forked tongue or a set of fangs.
