Beja Airport, Portugal: sonar buoys chutes - sonobuoys are used in anti-submarine warfare and submarine rescue - there are two main types, active buoys send out sonar pulses, which reflect off the submarine and passive buoys that listen for any radiated noise from the submarine contact - hydrophone sensors and stabilizing equipment are below the water surface, the buoy relays acoustic information from its hydrophone via UHF/VHF radio to operators on board the aircraft - Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft, a military derivative of the Lockheed L-188 Electra.
