On the West Coast an image of The weka, also known as the Māori hen or woodhen is a flightless bird species of the rail family. It is endemic to New Zealand. It is the only extant member of the genus Gallirallus. Four subspecies are recognized but only two are supported by genetic evidence.
The sora (Porzana carolina) is a small waterbird of the family Rallidae, sometimes also referred to as the sora rail or sora crake. Malheur National Wildlife Reserve, Oregon.  Gruiformes, Rallidae.
The ubiqutous weka is common in the NZ bush, particularly around back-country huts. They are cheeky, and often steal people's things.
