The aquatic larva of the dobsonfly, known as a hellgrammite, is also large and intimidating, and can catch prey as large as small fish. Most active at night, the adult may fly toward lights. Anglers use hellgrammites as bait, especially for smallmouth bass. The presence of hellgrammites in a stream indicates clean water.
