Ouidah / Whydah / Ajuda, Atlantique Department, Benin: boys play on Maro Square (France Avenue), near their school and the Central Mosque with its Afro-Brazilian architecture, completed in 1818, built by Senegalese and Malian immigrants. Islam is one of Benin ’s major religions, particularly prevalent in the northern regions. Approximately 30% of the population adheres to Islam, with the majority being Sunni Muslims, influenced by the Maliki school of thought. Islam was introduced to Benin through trans-Saharan trade routes and further spread by the migration of Hausa, Fulani, and Songhai ethnic groups. Today, the religion is deeply integrated into the cultural and social fabric of northern Benin, where mosques and Islamic educational institutions play an important role in community life.

Ouidah, Atlantique Department, Benin: the Temple of the Pythons is one of the most significant spiritual sites for practitioners of the Vodun (Voodoo) religion. Dedicated to the worship of pythons, which are sacred symbols of strength, fertility, and protection in Vodun, the temple houses dozens of live pythons in a large pit. The temple plays a key role in Vodun rituals and ceremonies, and visitors are often invited to handle the pythons, which are non-venomous snakes. West African Voodoo, or Vodun, is an ancient religion originating in the regions now known as Benin, Togo, and Ghana, and is rooted in the culture and traditions of the Fon, Ewe, and Yoruba peoples. Vodun is centered on the belief in a supreme deity, Mawu, along with a pantheon of spirits known as loa or vodun that govern nature and human life, such as fertility, agriculture, and death. Ancestral worship and the veneration of natural elements like water, earth, animals and trees are also central to its practice. Rituals often involve music, dance, animal sacrifices, and offerings to the spirits to maintain harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds.
