Nuuk / Godthåb, Sermersooq, Greenland: aerial view of the city, Nuuk bay and the harbor - Nuuk (Greenlandic for headland) is the capital of Greenland, a self-governing territory in the Kingdom of Denmark . Nuuk is Greenland's largest city with around 20,000 inhabitants. The Godthaab colony, later Nuuk, was founded in 1728 by the Dano-Norwegian Lutheran missionary, Hans Egede, sent by the Danish king to find the Norsemen. Hans Egede instead met the Greenlandic Inuit who had lived in the area for centuries. The colony Godthaab was thus established in the settlement of Nuuk, more specifically in the area around Ippiup Qaava. Nuuk is located at the mouth of the extensive fjord system Nuup Kangerlua on the west coast of Greenland approximately 240 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Nuuk is the main town in Sermersooq Municipality, bigger than Spain in terms of area and with only 25,000 inhabitants.
