Nuuk / Godthåb, Sermersooq, Greenland: aerial view of the capital of Greenland, the city, Nuuk bay and the harbor - Nuuk (Greenlandic for headland) is Greenland's largest city with around 20,000 inhabitants. The Godthaab colony, later Nuuk, was founded in 1728 by the Danish-Norwegian priest, Hans Egede, sent by the Danish king to find the Norsemen. Hans Egede instead met the Greenlandic Inuit who had lived in the area for centuries. The colony Godthab was thus established in the settlement of Nuuk, in the area around Ippiup Qaava. Nuuk is located at the mouth of the extensive fjord system Nuup Kangerlua on the west coast of Greenland approximately 240 kilometers south of the Arctic Circle. Nuuk is the main town in Sermersooq, a Municipality the size of France in terms of area and with only 25,000 inhabitants.
