The Fremont’s Cottonwood (Populus fremontii) is a poplar tree native to the American Southwest and south through central Mexico. The tree was named after John C. Fremont, the 19th century American explorer. The riparian tree grows near streams, rivers, springs and wetlands below 6,600 ft elevation. This scene of a Fremont Cottonwood with its fall foliage was photographed from the Kisva Trail by Oak Creek in Red Rock State Park near Sedona, Arizona, USA.

The tallest of these are Humphreys at 12,637 feet and Agassiz at 12,356 feet. This picture of the snow-capped peaks was taken from the Arizona Trail which runs through Buffalo Park in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

In Northern Arizona, especially in higher elevations such as the Flagstaff area, you can experience stunning fall colors from aspens, oaks, cottonwoods and other trees. Oak trees are not as numerous or well-known for their fall colors as aspen trees. However, the oak leaves sometimes turn shades of deep red or maroon during the fall, adding some variety to the landscape. These oak trees were photographed from the Arizona Trail on McMillan Mesa in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Buffalo Park is a 163-acre park located on McMillan Mesa in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. The park was created on land acquired in 1963 from the United States Forest Service. It was originally set up as wildlife park featuring a pond stocked with ducks and other waterfowl as well as a few native animals such as elk. By the time the park opened in 1964, eight bison were brought in to reside there. These bison gave Buffalo Park its name. The wildlife park lost money and the animals were removed after 5 years. Today Buffalo Park is managed as open-space and has become the crown jewel of the city’s park system. The park offers breathtaking panoramic views of the San Francisco Peaks, Mount Elden and the Dry Lake Hills. This panorama features the San Francisco Peaks and the golden hued grasses of the McMillan Mesa Meadows.
