The Cederberg Wilderness Area, managed by Cape Nature Conservation, is a wonderfully rugged mountain range about 200km north of Cape Town. Largely unspoiled, this designated wilderness area is characterised by high altitude fynbos and, not surprisingly, considering the name, sizeable cedar trees.

The Border between 29 Palms and the 49 Palms exhibit entrance of Joshua Tree National Park are not separated by much distance, only a large fortress of rocks forming an enclosure. The silent sentinel of these aggregated minerals represent another barrier, past which no introduced species, and only minimal development, are allowed by law. Perhaps if we integrated some of these practices into our larger settlements, we could live more harmoniously with native ecology, as our predecessors once did.

Ancient grinding stone depressions used by Native Americans can be found in areas of the Anza Borrego Desert state park. The largest state park in the country located east of San Diego and is part of the Colorado and Sonoran desert ecosystem.
