The Northern Harrier or Marsh Hawk (Circus cyaneus) is a migratory bird of prey that breeds in the northern hemisphere and winters in the southernmost USA, Mexico and Central America. It hunts by swooping low and following the contours of the land. Its prey consists of mice, snakes, insects and small birds. This female was found in Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area near McNeal, Arizona, USA.
Red Tail Hawk
Female red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) on ground in winter, searching for food. The feathers on a red-tailed hawk’s upper leg can be hard to see. They’re obvious here because the hawk was walking. Note the bare lower leg. The rough-legged hawk, in contrast, is feathered all the way to the toes. Most owls also have fully feathered legs. The bushier a bird of prey’s leg feathers, the more powerful it seems. Female redtails can be distinguished from males by their larger size. A wild and free bird, photographed in a Connecticut nature preserve.
