Built in Neo-classical style on the Quirinal hill between 1573 and 1583 as the residence of Pope Gregory XIII, over the centuries this palace has been the papal residence (1605-1870), the residence of the King of Italy (1871-1946) and the official seat of the Presidency of the Republic (from 1946 to today). Some of the most important Italian architects and artists participated in its construction and decoration, including Gian Lorenzo Bernini, Carlo Maderno, Guido Reni and Domenico Fontana.
