Ceriana, region of Ligury, Italy - March 2, 2014: the village. Ceriana is nestled among the hills of the Italian Riviera. It was built in the hills in order to protect the inhabitants from pirates and Saracens who ravaged the Mediterranean Coast during the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, this town grew to become a cluster of stone buildings huddled around the ancient church of Saint Andrew, built on the site of a Roman temple. Its most important monument is the Romanesque church of the Holy Spirit, built in the 12th Century.
