Hammershus, Northern Europe's largest castle ruin on Bornholm, dates back to the late 13th century in black and white. Originally built by Archbishop Jens Grand, it played a key role in Bornholm's history. Notably, King Christian IV's daughter, Leonora Christina, and her husband were imprisoned there in 1660-61. The fortress was abandoned in 1743, and after years of decay, it was protected in 1822, preserving its historical significance.

King Charles's Castle ruins on Tresco are freely open to the public with totally unrestricted access. \nThe fort was intended to protect the narrow strait leading past New Grimsby harbour and on towards St Mary’s, but proved to be badly sited to withstand attack or to fire on ships in the channel below. Its guns would have to point down at so steep an angle to hit ships in New Grimsby Channel that the cannonballs would have rolled out of the cannons before they fired!

Magpie Mine is near the village of Sheldon and dates back to 1740. It is famous for fatal running battles it had with other mines over resources which led to a 'widows' curse' on the men of Magpie Mine after they were implicated - but cleared - of the deaths of some of their competitors. When the mine was closed in 1958 it was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire. It is a standing old ruin which is free for the public to view and explore.

Dunluce Castle is a now-ruined medieval castle in Northern Ireland, the seat of Clan MacDonnell. It is located on the edge of a basalt outcropping in County Antrim (between Portballintrae and Portrush), and is accessible via a bridge connecting it to the mainland. The castle is surrounded by extremely steep drops on either side, which may have been an important factor to the early Christians and Vikings who were drawn to this place where an early Irish fort once stood.
