The Odeon or theatrum tectum as it was called by the Romans, was built during the early years of the colony ( 79 BC ), as evidenced by an inscription, as requested by two local magistrates, Marcus Porcius and Caius Quinctius Valgus who also requested the construction of the amphitheatre. This building was dedicated to the representation of the most popular theatrical genre at the time, miming, and could also be used for musical and singing performances.

As you enter the ancient city, the Coliseum comes into view just over the hill. The city of Pompeii located in southern Italy was a busy, wealthy Roman city that was destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of ash and molten pumice by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79. Believed to have been built in 600-700 BC by the Osci, it came under Roman rule in the 4th century BC and became a Roman colony in 80 BC. After the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius, the site was lost for about 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599. The artifacts found have been well-preserved for centuries because of the lack of air and moisture and provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana. Pompeii is a very popular tourist attraction with about 2.5 annual visitors. The area became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
