The Roman Walls were constructed between 271 and 275 A.D. during the reign of Emperors Aurelian and Probus. The concrete, brick, and mortar walls were built up to 33 feet high in some places and 11 feet thick with a tower every 97 feet. A gate in the Aurelian walls built in the early 5th century by Emperor Honoius.  The gate remained closed until the early 20th century.  There is a marble relief facing Via Veneto honoring the fallen soldiers in WWI.
