Guatavita, Colombia - June 28, 2016: Looking from the main entrancce into the main town square in the Andean town of Guatavita in the Cundinamarca Department of the South American country of Colombia. A section of the Andes Mountains can be seen in the background. Though completed in the 1960s, the town is designed and built in the colonial Spanish style of architecture. Situated about an hour's drive from the capital city of Bogotá, it is located at an elevation of 8,660 feet above sea level and is a popular weekend destination with both local Colombians, and tourists. On the wall is a sign indicating the Guatavita Museum. The Embalse de Tominé (the Lake), can be seen as a sliver just above the square walls. The water level is low due to the El Niño phenomenon. Olivença / Olivenza, Évora district / Badajoz province, Portugal / Spain, EU: multi-lobed arch of the entrance of the Town Hall in Constitution Square - Portuguese late Gothic (Manueline) ornamentation with Portuguese symbols and coat of arms - Olivença is a historically contested town located east of the Guadiana river. It has been the subject of a long-standing territorial dispute between Spain and Portugal since the early 19th century. The town reflects a blend of Portuguese and  Spanish cultural and architectural influences.

The colonial architecture of Villa de Leyva, which dates back to the 16th century, is a treasure that connects us with Colombia s colonial past. Its characteristics lie in its sobriety and functionality, as well as the thick adobe walls, built to maintain a pleasant temperature inside.
Walking through the cobblestoned streets in colonial Ouro Preto, MInas Gerais, is a walk through histoy.  Colorful windows, and doors give a special touch to this lovely town.

Olivença / Olivenza, Évora district / Badajoz province, Portugal / Spain, EU: multi-lobed arch of the entrance of the Town Hall in Constitution Square, known as the Cadaval Palace - Portuguese late Gothic (Manueline) ornamentation with Portuguese symbols and coat of arms - Olivença is a historically contested town located east of the Guadiana river. It has been the subject of a long-standing territorial dispute between Spain and Portugal since the War of the Oranges, part of the Napoleonic wars. Olivença was transferred to Spain through the Treaty of Badajoz (1801), which was nullified by the Treaty of Fontainebleau (1807), which is the base of the continued the Portuguese claim. Olivença is part of Spain's lot of territorial disputes together with Gibraltar and the north African exclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

Villa de Leyva, Colombia - September 14, 2014: Detail of colonial Spanish architecture in the town of Villa de Leyva in Colombia. Founded in 1572, and located at just over 7000 feet above sea level on the Andes Mountains, the whole town was declared a National Monument in 1954 to protect it's colonial architecture and heritage. It is located in the Department of Boyaca, in the South American country of Colombia. This stately old building now houses the museum of the Colombian artist, Luis Alberto Acuna.
