The Montelbaanstoren tower on Oudeschans canal in Amsterdam, Netherlands, built in 1516 for the purpose of defending the city.\nAmsterdam's canals stretch for a total of more than one hundred kilometers, with some 1,500 bridges crossing them, connecting around 90 islands.\nComposed mainly of old brick buildings, many dating from the years 1600-1700. Through these canals registered with UNECO, the majority of which are navigable, water dominates this city.

Since then the tower has been 48m tall.\n\nBecause the 3rd Duke of Alba proposed incorporating the tower into a castle (the Monte Albano) the tower became known in Dutch as the Monte Albano Toren.
