It measures between 27 and 31 centimeters in length, its wingspan is between 71 and 83 centimeters, and its weight is between 165 and 395 grams.\nQuite similar to its congener batuiruçu, it differs in its resting plumage due to the less evident white stripe or superciliary line with duller tones, in addition to having a slightly thicker beak. In flight, a large black spot stands out under the wings, in the axillae. In post- and pre-nuptial plumage, males exhibit blackish underparts, like their congener, but the back is mottled in blackish tones without any yellow, and the belly is white.

Female Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus) in a pond near Nome, Alaska. This bird breeds in arctic north America and Eurasia and winters far to the south mainly in open tropical oceans. The females of all three species of phalaropes are more colorful than the males. They choose a mate and lay their eggs in a nest built by the male, and the eggs are incubated and the chicks are raised solely by the male.
Red-necked Phalarope, Vancouver, BC, Canada
The Red-necked Phalarope, Phalaropus lobatus, is a small wader. This phalarope breeds in the Arctic regions of North America and Eurasia. It is migratory, and, unusually for a wader, winters at sea on tropical oceans. Monterey Bay Monterey County, California
The typical avian sex roles are reversed in the three phalarope species. Females are larger and more brightly coloured than males. The females pursue and fight over males, and will defend their mate from other females until the clutch is complete and the male begins incubation. The males perform all incubation and chick-rearing activities, while the females may attempt to find another mate.
