Hiker, standing on a rock, spreads his arms showing the joy of being at the nascent of the creek that flows from Hoyada or Grande Lagoon (Laguna Grande) located in the highest mountain range of Tachira State, Venezuela. La Grita city is the nearest town to these remote moorlands that are difficult to get to with mountains the exceeds the 3,000 meters above sea level mark. This periglacial lagoon is at 3,400 masl and has 400 meteres in diameter. To see this magnificent gift of nature you have to drive about 20 minutes from La Grita up to the highest paved road of Tachira State in Osorio; then, take two more hours of driving with off road vehicle through the mountains; and finally, there is a two hours hike under severe conditions like small narrow steep rocky gorges, low oxygen level due to the altitue, cold foggy weather and high hills. The scene is magnificent, worth every effort in getting there.

The maquis, or macchia, is a type of dense, evergreen shrubland found primarily in the Mediterranean region. This vegetation is characterized by hardy shrubs and small trees such as holm oak, rosemary, and juniper, which thrive in the hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters typical of Mediterranean climates. The maquis habitat is well adapted to fire, with many plants having thick bark and deep root systems to survive and regenerate after wildfires. It provides a unique and rich ecosystem for a variety of wildlife.

A single plant of a perennial Capachito (Calceolaria thyrsiflora) growing on a mountainside by the river Maule, southern-central Chile. There are about 60 species of Calceolaria native to Chile, and several of the yellow-flowered species are called “Capachito†(from hooded Capuchin monks) by the local inhabitants and so are not distinguished by common names. In the English-speaking world the Calceolaria are often known as ‘slipper flower’ or ‘pocketbook flower’ because of their purse-shaped lower flower petals.
