Dadaab, Kenya - August 13, 2011: A newly arrived Somali refugees waits following their registration and food on August 13, 2011 at the Dadaab refuge complex. UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos toured today the refuge complex holding more that 440,000 refugees during the third day of her visit to southern Somalia and to the Kenya-hosted refugee complex to asses the impact of the famine. Her visit comes as the UN said its moving on two fronts to counter the worsening food crisis in the Horn of Africa, with an immediate infusion of food in an area where 640,000 children alone are threatened with acute malnutrition.

In north-east Nigeria, Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, is facing an unprecedented humanitarian disaster caused by the worst flooding the city has seen in 30 years. Caused by the overflowing of the Alau dam, the flood inundated entire communities, destroyed crucial infrastructure, and forced more than 400,000 people from their homes.

NAIROBI, KENYA-MAY 14, 2021: Women wash their dirty laundries and utensils by the heavily flooded river Mutuine on May 14, 2021 in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya. Residents of Kibera Slums living close by Mutuine River were left homeless after the heavy floods that occured on May 13th, thursday night. Atleast four residents died including two young motorcyclist who were trying to cross over the river late at night whose copes were found nearby the  ongoing bridge construction as hundreds of residents were also left homeless.

Djègbadji, Ouidah commune, Atlantique Department, Benin: Djègbadji lagoon vernacular architecture - houses built on the water, made with thatched roofs and walls of dried palm leaves - Djègbadji village is known for its traditional salt production methods, where residents harvest salt from the lagoon sand using techniques passed down through generations. Djègbadji's economy primarily revolves around salt production, fishing, and small-scale agriculture. The Ifo extension, which will provide tented accommodation to 90,000 refugees by the end of November, had been prepared several weeks ago but its opening was delayed owing to opposition from Kenyan government ranks citing a threat to the national security.
