View of Acropolis of Lindos from the tourboat; above the modern town rises the acropolis of Lindos; a natural citadel which was fortified successively by the Greeks; the Romans; the Byzantines; the Knights of St John and the Ottomans. This makes the site difficult to excavate and interpret archaeologically.

The Governor’s Palace of the Castle of the Knights of St. John consisted of a total of three buildings but today only two of them remain. The first renovation took place sometime in the 14th century by the Knights of St John, while the second major remodelling was undertaken by Danish experts in the early 20th century. Except for a few parts of the medieval fortification, there is nothing standing from before the time of the Knights...The Crusaders had rebuilt the fortifications from scratch, making many changes and improvements as the years went by. The existing towers follow the natural conformation of the cliff. There was a pentagonal tower on the south side commanding the harbour, the settlement and the road from the south of the island. There was a large circular tower on the east facing the sea and two more, a second round one and the other, a square, on a corner of the area, on the northeast side of the inner line of fortifications that surrounds the ancient and medieval buildings, known as the enceinte...Today one of the towers at the southwest corner and one to the west of the Governor's Palace still survive. On the 30th of December 1522 the castle occupants surrendered to the Turks. During the 16th and 17th centuries the use of cannon in warfare made it necessary to construct bastions at the three corners of the castle. A small Turkish garrison, which occupied it until 1844, carried out a few minor building works of a military nature..Castle location
