Travertine rock formations build up over time from the dripping and evaporation of mineral laden water. Eventually the travertine forms into stalactites and shallow caves. Tonto Natural Bridge is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. It stands over a 400-foot-long tunnel that is 150 feet wide and 183 feet high. The volume of rock in the bridge is estimated to be 200 million cubic feet. The bridge is the result of water laden with calcium carbonate from perennial springs that have dripped for thousands of years. The natural bridge was discovered by Scotsman David Gowan in 1877. Gowan persuaded his family to emigrate and move to the location where they built a lodge in 1927. They lived there until 1948 when the land and building were sold to Pine native Glen Randall. In 1967 Randall’s widow sold the property and eventually it became a State Park. The lodge is still standing and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is near Pine, Arizona, USA.

Grasslands occupy one-third of Arizona, taking up some 24 million acres. They provide a unique habitat for wildlife and are part of a large and diverse network of grasslands found throughout the southwestern U.S. and northern Mexico. Semi-desert grasslands found in central and southeastern Arizona reach into Sonora, Mexico and New Mexico. Grasslands in Northern Arizona are similar to those found in the Great Basin and the Colorado Plateau in Colorado, Utah and New Mexico. In the mountainous areas of Northern Arizona, grassland meadows can be found interspersed within the conifer forests. Hart Prairie is a vast grassland located on the northwest side of the San Francisco Peaks. At 12,637 feet above sea level, Humphrey's Peak dominates the landscape above the prairie. Hart Prairie is in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Aspen groves are unique ecosystems characterized by a remarkable ability to reproduce vegetatively, leading to the formation of what appears to be a single organism known as a clonal colony. Aspen trees (Populus tremuloides) primarily reproduce through a process called suckering. The grove starts from a single seedling, but over time, new shoots (suckers) emerge from the root system, creating genetically identical trees. These interconnected trees form a clonal colony, often considered the largest living organism on Earth. The trees within an aspen grove are connected by a common root system. This interconnected root network allows the trees to share resources such as water and nutrients. It also enables them to communicate with each other, making the grove function as a unified entity. This aspen grove on a hillside was photographed in the Coconino National Forest north of Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
