Before their conflation with Greek satyrs, they and Faunus were represented as naked men. Later fauns became copies of the satyrs of Greek mythology, who themselves were originally shown as part-horse rather than part-goat.

It is a monument dedicated to the figure of Lucifer, the fallen angel. It was donated by the Crown to the Town of Madrid for its ornamentation, with the condition that a suitable pedestal be made for the sculpture. Its execution was carried out by the architect Jareño y Alarcón, and it was inaugurated in 1885 in the vicinity of the place where the Buen Retiro Porcelain Factory was located. The model of the sculpture had been made in plaster by the sculptor Ricardo Bellver, the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, who proposed to the Minister of State that it be reproduced in marble or bronze. It was inaugurated in its current location by Queen Regent María Cristina of Habsburg in 1885.
