The Wandering Albatross, Snowy Albatross or White-winged Albatross, Diomedea exulans, is a large seabird from the family Diomedeidae, which has a circumpolar range in the Southern Ocean. The Wandering Albatross is the largest member of the genus Diomedea (the great albatrosses), one of the largest birds in the world, and one of the best known and studied species of bird in the world. The Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophris) is a large seabird that breeds on 12 circumpolar islands in the southern oceans. The largest colony, with over 400,000, is on the Falkland Islands. Despite having a total population of over 1.2 million, ongoing declines in their numbers have led to their categorization as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List. They do not breed until they are 10 years old, but beginning in their third and fourth year they return to their breeding grounds to practice their elaborate courtship rituals. They raise only one chick at a time.

A single Wandering Albatross (Diomedea exulans), wings spread, soaring over the Pacific Ocean off southern Chile. The Wandering Albatross ‘species’ is currently split into several ‘types’ or ‘races’ that some biologists regard as separate species or subspecies. This bird seems to be a member of the “New Zealand” type, although it is not the only ‘type’ that breeds around those islands.
