$Spring willow budding (lat. Salix caprea). A willow with soft fluffy silvery or yellow red catkins that appear before the leaves. \nFlower pollen and tiny needles of pussy willow carried by the wind cause hay fever, itchy skin and similar allergy symptoms to some people.\nHEALING PROPERTIES: Fresh bark of all species of this genus contains salicin, which is likely to be broken down into salicylic acid (similar to aspirin) in the human body. The extract from the leaves is used as a remedy for colds. Distilled water from the flowers is an aphrodisiac, tonic and as a stimulant. It is only used to treat headaches. Willow extracts are useful as a remedy for dandruff and oily hair.\nThe inside of the bark is edible, raw or overcooked. Dry it, grind to a powder and add to the flour. Young shoots are also edible.$

Many catkins (flowers) and leaves of the Coliguay (Colliguaja integerrima) shrub in early spring in central Chile, near the capital Santiago. Male flowers and female flowers are seperated by height and, when the fruit capsule ripens, the seeds are thrown several metres away. The species is a type of spurge (Euphorbid) and, like many spurges, has many uses in medicine and poisons. The milky sap can ‘burn’ the skin, and is used in folk medicine for pains and toothache (without swallowing it because it is toxic), as well as to treat corns and warts. In the past, it was used to poison arrowheads used by aboriginal peoples.
