The memorial plaque to Sir William Wallace on the wall of St Bartholomew's Hospital in West Smithfield, London: it was erected in 2005 to mark the 700th anniversary of his execution for 'treason'. Sir William was a Scottish patriot who opposed the English invasion of Scotland but who was betrayed by one of his own countrymen. The memorial is a site of pilgrimage by many Scots, as is evident here by the Saltire flag (the Scottish St Andrew's cross) and other items left in his memory. The holes in the stone wall were caused during World War Two.
