Roskilde, Denmark - December 14, 2015: Interior of Roskilde Cathedral. Since the Protestant Reformation in 16th century all Danish kings and almost all queens have been buried in Roskilde Cathedral. Behind the high altar are situated the sarcophagi of Queen Margaret I, Duke Christopher, King Frederick IV and his wife Louise.
Roskilde Cathedral constructed during the 12th and 13th centuries, the cathedral incorporates both Gothic and Romanesque architectural features in its design. The cathedral has been the main burial site for Danish monarchs since the 15th century. UNESCO World Heritage Site

Beautiful burial chapel - Helligtrekongerskapel - with the sarcophagi of King Christian III and his son King Frederik II in Roskilde Cathedral. \nRoskilde Cathedral was opened in 1175 when Denmark was still catholic. With the reformation in 1536 Denmark became protestant. Most Danish kings and queens are buried in the cathedral, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Roskilde, Denmark - December 14, 2015: Panoramic view of interior of Chapel of the Magi (or Christian I's Chapel) in Roskilde Cathedral with sepulchral monuments of the Danish kings Christian III (left) and Frederick II (right). The Gothic chapel was built in the 15th century. The Christian III's monument was created by the Flemish sculptor and architect Cornelis Floris de Vriendt in 1574-1575 and placed in the chapel in 1580. The Frederick II's monument was built 1594–1598 by the Flemish sculptor Gert van Egen, a pupil of Cornelis Floris.

Roskilde Cathedral in the city of Roskilde on the Island of Zealand in eastern Denmark, was the first Gothic cathedral to be built of brick and its construction encouraged the spread of this Brick Gothic style throughout Northern Europe. It was built during the 12th and 13th centuries, and incorporates both Gothic and Romanesque architectural features in its design. The cathedral's twin spires dominate the skyline of the town.
