Rocks that once held down the edges of a Native American tipi remain in a circle, sunken into the soil with time where they were left on the prairie. The tipi ring sits among many more rings that remain on the hilly plains of Pawnee National Grasslands in northern Colorado.

Zau Evua, Zaire Province, Angola: Cubitermes sp. epigeal nest / hill / mount - Cubitermitinae are an Afrotropical subfamily of higher termites. The outer shell of the nest is thick and durable, serving as a protective barrier against predators, environmental elements, and intruders. It also helps to regulate the internal temperature and humidity. Cubitermes termites build nests with one or more caps used to shield the nest against rainfall, giving them a characteristic mushroom shape.

I am fascinated by what appears to be a sterile dead environment until I look closer and see tiny mosses, lichens and algae actually growing a stabilizing soil on undistrubed sand. I learned about this fragile cryptobiotic soil from rangers in the United States National Parks.

Porcellio spinicornis is a medium-sized Porcellio species, typically measuring 10 to 15 mm in length. It has a dark gray, brown, light brown or yellow coloration, with two rows of yellow spots. The species has a shiny exoskeleton with slight granulation.

A two-month-old wild baby elephant after being rescued by the community and rangers from a mud pit in Panton Beunot village, Tiro sub-district, Aceh. After being trapped for three days, the community and rangers tried to help rescue it and then brought it to the elephant conservation center for medical treatment. After two weeks of treatment, the baby elephant died.
