A suggestive view from below of the Cappella di Piazza (Chapel of the Square) on the facade of the Palazzo Pubblico in Piazza del Campo, in the medieval heart of Siena, in Tuscany. Located on the left side of the palace under the Torre del Mangia, this chapel is a marble tabernacle in Gothic style built in 1352 in honor of the Virgin Mary for having saved the city from the plague of 1348. Built in 1290 as the seat of the Council of Nine and of the executive power of the medieval city, the majestic Palazzo Pubblico is still the seat of the municipal government of Siena. The Torre del Mangia was built between 1338 and 1348 on a project by Giovanni Balduccio, known as the 'Mangia', becoming the symbol of the political and military power of Siena compared to its rival Florence. Center of the city life since 1169, Piazza del Campo or simply Campo is one of the most beautiful and famous squares in the world for its particular shell shape. In this space every year the seventeen historical districts of Siena compete in the Palio, one of the oldest horse races in the world. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, visited for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for its famous popular traditions. Since 1995 the historic center of Siena has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition quality.
