Designed by Paul Philippe Cret, the arch was dedicated in 1917 to celebrate the arrival of General George Washington and the Continental Army at Valley Forge, the military camp 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia where the American Continental Army spent the winter of 1777-78 during the American Revolutionary War.
