In 1924 miners at the Buxton Quarry near Taung in South Africa's North West Province discovered a fossil that was later identified by Dart as an Australopithecus africanus, the first discovery of its kind. His reconstruction consists of three separate parts: the mandible, the face, and an endocranial cast. Age: approximately 2,5 million years. Taung is part of the UNESCO Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site.
