Tufa is a variety of limestone formed when carbonate minerals precipitate out of ambient temperature water. Geothermally heated hot springs sometimes produce similar carbonate deposits known as travertine. These are beautiful spires coming out of the water. This image was taken with a Nikon D3s and a Tamron 16 - 300mm lens. This image will delight all that sees it hanging in your home or office.

Tufa towers give an otherworldly look to the south shore of Mono Lake at sunrise. The lake is actually an inland sea and is located just east of the town of Lee Vining, California, USA. The tufa towers are the result of calcium rich snowmelt and carbonate deposits in the lakebed. The lake contains 280 million tons of disolved salts.
