Paramaribo, Suriname: Waterkant (Waterfront) is the oldest street in Paramaribo, located on the Suriname River waterfront. Due to its iconic appearance, it forms a central part of the historic city center of Paramaribo, which has been protected by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Many of the original buildings were lost during the city fire of 1821 . After the fire, the architect Johan August Voigt gave Paramaribo a new cityscape by erecting an ensemble of monumental buildings on the Waterkant.
