Zau Evua, Zaire Province, Angola: Cubitermes sp. epigeal nest / hill / mount in a filed with burnt grass - Cubitermitinae are an Afrotropical subfamily of higher termites. The outer shell of the nest is thick and durable, serving as a protective barrier against predators, environmental elements, and intruders. It also helps to regulate the internal temperature and humidity. Cubitermes termites build nests with one or more caps used to shield the nest against rainfall, giving them a characteristic mushroom shape.

Agate is a microcrystalline variety of quartz, chiefly chalcedony, cryptocrystalline form of silica. Although agates may be found in various kinds of rock, they are classically associated with volcanic rocks but can be common in certain metamorphic rocks. Most agates occur as nodules in volcanic rocks or ancient lavas where they represent cavities originally produced by the disengagement of volatiles in the molten mass which were then filled, wholly by siliceous matter deposited in regular layers upon the walls. A thick growth of greenshield lichen on a rock. The leaf-like lobes proclaim this a foliose lichen. Lichens are interesting, often beautiful, life forms. They cover 7% of the earth's surface. Though they undergo photosynthesis, they are not plants. They are composite organisms in which algae and fungi live symbiotically. The three main types are foliose, fruticose and crustose. Lichens are indicators of environmental quality, and they do no harm to the natural substrates on which they grow.
