The 1935 art deco De La Warr Pavilion was the second modernist building to be completed in the UK (after Hornsey Town Hall). The 9th Earl De Law Warr (a socialist, and mayor of Bexhill at the time) held an architectural competition, won by Erich Mendelsohn and Serge Chermayeff, and the building is now Grade One Listed (ie protected by UK law). It was renovated in the early 2000s thanks to a £6m grant from the UKs Heritage Lottery Fund and ownership was passed from the local authority to a charitable trust. It is an incredibly important local facility, acting as a cherished theatre, arts centre and community hub, and is on the tour venue list of many major artists. It contains a book shop, focused on the arts, and a restaurant with stunning ocean views (you can see some people at outside tables on the balcony). There are plenty of shots of this beautiful building on Getty Images/iStock but a couple more will do no harm - it looks different with every slight change in the South Coast light and personally, I can never see too much of it. Archival materials relating to this important art deco building are held at the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library at Columbia University in New York City (but just as an aside, why there, and not Sussex University, or at least, University College, London, circa 40 miles away?)
