New Mexico has some of the flattest land as well as some of the most rugged mountains in the country. Some portions of the state are rich in pine forests, meadows, and fish-laden mountain streams, while other areas are devoid of any water bodies, and even cacti struggle to survive.

The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of important mountain ranges. In the northwest are the Absaroka, the Owl Creek, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horns; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern portion of Wyoming, the Laramie, Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.
Horizontal composition filled with the branches and trunk of a dead Rocky Mountain Juniper tree that originally grew in a tangled, twisted gnarly mass. The largest mass of gray tree trunk occupies most of the right side of this horizontal composition, with branches extending in all directions but generally in a downward direction toward the lower left of frame. The backdrop is a mix of muted green vegetation and red rock, somewhat blocked from view by the mass of tangled dead tree.
